HUXLEY, Aldous Leonard (1894-1963). Typed letter signed ('Aldous Huxley') to Harry Crosby, Barcelona, 18 October 1929, one page, 4to, autograph envelope. Provenance: sale, Swann Galleries, 14 June 1984, lot 113.
'I LIKED THE POEMS FOR A CERTAIN QUALITY OF PURITY AND BRIGHTNESS, MOST RARE AND REFRESHING, A GENUINE LYRICAL BEAUTY'. Huxley writes to thank Crosby for sending a volume of poetry, which arrived just before Huxley's departure for Spain on 13 October (to attend a Congress for Intellectual Cooperation in Barcelona), and apologise for his tardy acknowledgement. Having praised the poems for their qualities of 'purity and brightness', Huxley then regrets 'some of those omissions of words' (admitting that he is 'excessively conservative' in matters of grammar and syntax): 'For although the imagination could easily supply them [...] I still don't see that there is any real gain in expressiveness or poetic intensity to be achieved by the process'. Huxley then concludes with the hope that he will be able to see the Crosbys in Paris and comments that 'Our latest letter from [D.H.] Lawrence [who had been, with Huxley, a guest of the Crosbys at Le Moulin in April 1929] seemed quite cheerful--infinitely more so, at any rate, than his previous letter from Germany'. The volume referred to by Huxley could possibly be an early or proof copy of Crosby's Sleeping Together, which is dated on the colophon 'November 1929'.
