JOYCE, James. Pomes Penyeach. Paris: The Obelisk Press and London: Desmond Harmsworth Ltd, 1932.
Oblong 2° (255 x 335mm). Title and text a printed facsimile of Joyce's manuscript transcription, interleaved with tissue guards bearing the letterpress text of the poems printed in green. Pochoir-coloured title-page decoration and 13 initial 'lettrines' after Lucia Joyce. Loose as issued in original wrappers, original green silk portfolio, lettered in gilt on the upper board (portfolio with a few minor marks and light partial fading). Provenance: Harriet Shaw Weaver (1876-1961, presentation inscription on front free endpaper 'Harriet Weaver , to replace copy injured in , fire of May 30, 1934').
FIRST ENGLISH EDITION, PRINTED IN FRANCE, NO. 14 OF 25 SIGNED COPIES ON JAPON NACRE. INSCRIBED BY JOYCE TO HIS PATRON WEAVER. Harriet Shaw Weaver was one of the most important figures in Joyce's life, both as benefactor (first anonymously and then overtly) and as publisher, promoter and friend. Weaver originally owned copy no.18 of the Obelisk Press edition of Pomes Penyeach, which she signed and dated November 1932, but the volume was badly burnt during a fire at Weaver's London flat in May 1934. On 14 February 1935, Joyce's sister Eileen Joyce Schaurek took Lucia Joyce to London, to stay with Weaver; Lucia's mental ill-health was an increasing cause of concern to her father, and it was felt that a sojourn with Weaver would be beneficial. When Eileen departed for Ireland on 24 February, Lucia inscribed Weaver's copy to her 'this is for Eileen as it was burned Lucia 24-2-35 Viva l'Irlanda' (now in the McFarlin Library, University of Tulsa). The present copy was presumably sent to Weaver to replace that given away by Lucia, and perhaps also in acknowledgement of the difficulties that Lucia's sometimes wild and extreme behaviour had caused Weaver.
