4° (343 x 250mm). Title printed in blue and black. Collotype portrait frontispiece by John Johnson after Augustus John. Printed music. (Very occasional light spotting.) Original blue silk, upper board lettered in silver, top edge silvered, others uncut, original blue/grey paper envelope lettered in blue on the upper panel (extremities a little rubbed causing slight fraying, some wear to envelope, repaired with adhesive tape).
FIRST EDITION, NO. 126 OF 500 COPIES. WITH THE SCARCE ORIGINAL ENVELOPE. The Joyce Book contained all of the poems in Pomes Penyeach, set to music by contemporary composers, with a prologue in the form of a poem by James Stephens and an epilogue by Arthur Symons. The settings are: 'Tilly' by E.J. Moeran; 'Watching the Needleboats' by Arthur Bax; 'A Flower' by Albert Roussel; 'She Weeps over Rahoon' by Herbert Hughes; 'Tutto è sciolto' by John Ireland; 'On the Beach at Fontana' by Roger Sessions; 'Simples' by Arthur Bliss; 'Flood' by Herbert Howells; 'Nightpiece' by George Antheil; 'Alone' Edgardo Carducci; 'A Memory' by Eugene Goossens; 'Bahnhofstrasse' by C.W. Orr; and 'A Prayer' by Bernard van Dieman. Joyce was delighted not only with John's portrait--'Praise from a purblind penny poet would be ridiculous but your drawing is clearly the one thing in the book that is indissentable' (R. Ellmann Joyce, p.627)--but also with the publication itself, and celebrated it with the poem 'Pennipomes Twoguineaseach': 'Sing a song of shillings , A guinea cannot buy , Thirteen tiny pomikins , Bobbing in a pie. , The printers' pie was published , And the pomes began to sing , And wasn't Herbert Hughesius , as happy as a King' (R.
