JOYCE, James. Dubliners. London: The Riverside Press Limited for Grant Richards Ltd., 1914.
8° (190 x 126mm). (Occasional light spotting or marking, first gathering with very small tears causing unobtrusive loss at head of gutter.) Original red cloth, lettered in gilt on the upper board and spine, later morocco-backed slipcase (corners very lightly rubbed, spine slightly darkened).
FIRST PUBLISHED EDITION, preceded by the unpublished Grant Richards printing of 1906 and the Maunsel printing of 1910 (see note to previous lot). Following Joyce's two unsuccessful attempts to publish Dubliners (detailed in his article 'A Curious History' published in The Egoist vol. I, no. 2 (15 January 1914), pp.26-7, see lot 719), he continued to search for a publisher for it, and eventually came to an agreement with Grant Richards; Richards would publish the book, but Joyce would receive no royalties on the first 500 copies sold and would personally guarantee to purchase 120 copies, and, furthermore gave Richards the first refusal on all his works for the following five years. Under these extremely beneficial terms, Richards printed 1,250 sets of sheets, of which Slocum and Cahoon state 'approximately 746 were bound in this edition'. Slocum and Cahoon Joyce A8.
