John Sullivan was an Irish-French opera singer whom Joyce championed for several years from November 1929. It was during a performance of Guillaume Tell in Paris that Joyce staged a dramatic publicity stunt on Sullivan's behalf, when he leant out of a box, 'raised a pair of heavy dark glasses from his eyes, and exclaimed: "Merci, mon dieu, pour ce miracle. Après vingt ans, je revois la lumière"' (quoted by Ellmann Joyce, p.638). Joyce was in Switzerland in 1930 seeking an eye cure.
