LAWRENCE, Thomas Edward (1888-1935). Autograph letter signed ('T.E. Lawrence') to an unidentified correspondent ('Dear Sir'), 7 Dover Street, London, 14 September 1919, 1½ pages 8vo, on a bifolium (filing punches to right margin of second page).
LAWRENCE DISMISSES ANY IMMEDIATE PROSPECT OF THE PUBLICATION OF SEVEN PILLARS OF WISDOM. The letter begins with apologies for apparently not having replied to a request, but comments that he would in any case have refused '[as usual ........ I'm afraid you are no. 20]', explaining that 'my narrative of the Arab affair is very detailed, and far too private to admit of publication at the present time', insisting that he could not write any other account until this is 'finished to my entire satisfaction (years hence)'.
Lawrence's chariness of publishing Seven Pillars (and indeed his other books) is characteristic, but this is an unusually early reference to the work.
