FIRST EDITIONS, ONE AN INSCRIBED PRESENTATION COPY. Constant Lambert, composer and musical director of Vic-Wells (later Sadler and Royal) Ballet, seems to have been, according to Anthony Powell, 'one of the few from his age group whom Lewis was from time to time prepared to meet. Although within reason an admirer of Lewis's work (the writing more than the pictures) Lambert always treated the relationship as rather a joke, often telling stories to illustrate Lewis's perpetual nervous tension' (A. Motion The Lamberts (London: 1986) p.168). In 1932, the year of this book's inscription, Lambert sat for Lewis, who he regarded as 'one of our greatest draughtsmen' (loc. cit.), for a portrait which was included in Lewis's Thirty Personalities and a Self-Portrait (London: Desmond Harmondsworth, 1932). The first edition of Enemy of the Stars, rewritten for book publication from the original version published in Blast, No.1 (London: John Lane, 1914), was issued in three variant bindings and in two states: the bindings of these copies are the first variant, with the title in gold running down the spine, and they are a mixture of both the first and second states.
