GAUDIER-BRZESKA, Henri--Walter BENINGTON (1872-1936). A series of six vintage photographic prints of Henri Gaudier-Brzeska (226 x 176 and 213 x 164mm). (Lightly faded.). Provenance: sale, Sotheby's London, 2 May 1996, lot 248.
Ezra POUND and Walter BENINGTON (photographer). Gaudier-Brzeska. A Memoir. London and New York: William Clowes and Sons, Limited for John Lane/The Bodley Head and John Lane company, 1916. 4° (254 x 190mm). Title printed in red and black. Half-tone frontispiece after Benington and 37 plates, 3 after Benington. (Light marginal browning, first and last leaves browned, occasional spotting.) Original green cloth, upper board stamped with design after a carving by Gaudier-Brzeska, lettered in gilt on the upper board and spine, spine with publisher's name 'THE BODLEY HEAD' at foot (corners very lightly rubbed, spine slightly darkened). FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE. 1,000 sets of sheets were printed, of which some 200 were used for the American issue, and 350 were issued later; therefore this is one of circa 450 first edition, first issue copies. SIX VINTAGE PHOTOGRAPHS OF GAUDIER-BRZESKA BY WALTER BENINGTON; A RARE RECORD OF GAUDIER-BRZESKA IN HIS STUDIO. The photographer Walter Benington was introduced to Gaudier-Brzeska by Haldane McFall, and it was agreed that Benington would photograph the sculptor in his studio. Three of these photographs, taken in 1914, depict Gaudier-Brzeska working on his 'Hieratic Head of Ezra Pound' (for which, see the previous lot); two of these are reproduced as the frontispiece and plate IV in Pound's Gaudier-Brzeska and the third is reproduced as the frontispiece to A Memorial Exhibition of the Work of Henri Gaudier-Brzeska. Of the three other photographs, two are reproduced as plates II and III of Pound's Gaudier-Brzeska. (8)
