8° (204 x 136mm). Woodcut initials after Dorothy Shakespear Pound. (Scattered light spotting.) Original linen lettered in red on the upper board and spine, glassine dustwrapper (spine somewhat faded, dustwrapper torn with losses). Provenance: occasional pencilled annotations on the text, note in ink on lower pastedown.

FIRST EDITION, LIMITED TO 212 COPIES, THIS NO. 55 OF 200. 'These Cantos, the first half of which were published in 1925, represent the best work in Pound's 'poem of some length' which is still in progress. There are more lyrics and fewer chunks of prose than in the later, not so many economic propositions and ideograms, and some beautiful passages on the Homeric world and renaissance Italy' (Connolly).
