Original streaked grey cloth, upper board and spine lettered in gilt, the spine reading 'CAN , ZONI , OF , EZRA , POUND , ELKIN , MATHEWS' (spine very slighty darkened). FIRST EDITIONS, IN BOTH FIRST AND SECOND STATES OF THE BINDING, THE LATTER INSCRIBED BY POUND. 1,000 sets of sheets of Canzoni were printed; of these sheets, 500 or more were issued first in a grey cloth binding, and later--as Pound's note in the second copy confirms--in brown boards. An unknown number of sets of sheets, not exceeding 500, were subsequently bound up with sheets of Ripostes and issued as Canzoni & Ripostes by Elkin Mathews in 1913. (2)
