POUND, Ezra. Guide to Kulchur. London: R. MacLehose and Company Limited for Faber and Faber Limited, 1938.
8° (203 x 130mm). Half-tone frontispiece. (Occasional light marking.) Original green cloth, spine lettered in gilt, dustwrapper [first state, with printed price '10s. 6d.'] (spine and board edges a little darkened, dustwrapper somewhat marked and darkened on spine, tears causing minor losses). Provenance: [?]Ezra Pound (vide infra)--early manuscript notes on the rear free endpaper, one referring to a censored passage.
FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE. ONE OF 6 COPIES WITH UNEXPURGATED TEXT. Guide to Kulchur was to have been published in June 1938; however, after the sheets had been printed and a portion of the edition bound, the publishers decided that some passages were potentially libellous--for example references to Cosmo Lang, Rudyard Kipling and N.M. Butler--and at least 15 cancellans leaves were reprinted for the bound copies or reprinted with their conjugates for use in sets of the unbound sheets. The present copy retains in their original forms all the passages identified by Gallup as subjected to censorship. Only six copies of the first issue were preserved--five given to Pound and one retained by the publisher for their files; the absence of any archival stamps strongly suggests that this copy was one of the five given to Pound.
