FIRST EDITION OF LANGBAINE'S HISTORY OF THE ENGLISH STAGE. The work is arranged alphabetically by author, which include Aphra Behn, John Dryden, John Fletcher, Thomas Heywood, Thomas Middleton, James Shirley, and numerous others. A biographical sketch is followed by a short listing of the author's works. Of over 200 authors included in Langbaine's work, Shakespeare receives one of the longest treatments. His section, which fills pages 453 to 469, opens by calling Shakespeare "One of the most Eminent Poets of his Time." The list of his works details some of their sources. Wing L-373.
