(Vol. I title and A2 with inner margins renewed, upper margin renewed on title, few other marginal repairs, some occasional pale soiling; vol. II some spotting.) 18th-century speckled calf, spines gilt, red and green morocco lettering-pieces, edges stained yellow (front covers detached).
FIRST EDITIONS. At the outbreak of civil war, Margaret Lucas left for Paris; it was there she met her first husband, William Cavendish, marquis and later duke of Newcastle. They subsequently lived in Rotterdam and Antwerp before returning to England after the Restoration. During her banishment, she wrote plays, an endeavor she continued upon her return to England as a means to occupy herself during her voluntary seclusion from court. Wing N-868 and N-867. (2)
