A TALL COPY OF THE FIRST EDITION. A second edition dated 1714 was published later that year. The Tragedy of Jane Shore was first produced in February 1714 and ran for nineteen nights. In his Prologue, Rowe writes: "In such an Age, Immortal Shakespear wrote, By no quaint Rules, nor hampering Criticks taught; With rough, majestick Force he mov'd the Heart, And Strength, and Nature made amends for Art. Our humble Author does his Steps persue, He owns he had the mighty Bard in view." In 1709, Rowe had edited an edition of Shakespeare's works. Rothschild 1772 (second edition).
