(Title a bit soiled, lower corner of A2 renewed with loss of last 4 letters of Shirley's printed signature, some spotting.) 19th-century calf, Earl of Bridgewater crest on sides (front cover detached, spine rubbed). FIRST EDITION, the motto with the reading "Pantilvis." In 1625, Shirley abandoned the scholastic life and moved to London where he lived in Gray's Inn. There he began writing plays and between 1625 and 1642 he produced a rapid succession of plays. The beginnings of his career coincided with the accession of Charles I. Greg 477; STC 22462.
