2 volumes, 8° (224 x 140mm). Half-titles. 8 plates, including 2 folding, illustrations, folding coloured lithographic map by Doughty, mounted on linen, in rear pocket of volume I. (A few light spots to title and half-title of vol. I, some light marginal browning.) Uncut in original pictorial cloth gilt (extremities rubbed, lower corners a little worn, minor stains on covers, slight discolouration to covers of vol. II, inner hinges of vol. I slightly split, repairs to spine and inner hinges of vol. II). Provenance: volume I signed by the author (signed 'Charles M. Doughty' beneath tipped-in sepia portrait photograph, 90 x 65mm., on verso of front free endpaper); volume II with stamp of Thacker and Co., Bombay, and ownership inscription 'Ponafidine, Baghdad 1889' on opposite blank.
FIRST EDITION, VOLUME I SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR; a made-up set. The first edition of Doughty's great classic on Arabia was published in the year of T.E. Lawrence's birth; by the end of the first world war copies had become virtually unobtainable, and Lawrence himself wrote the introduction to the second edition which finally appeared in 1921. The set would appear to have been made up. (2)
