A late 19th-Century French glass globe box,
unsigned, with gilt brass fittings and tripod base -- 12cm. (4¾in.) diameter; 15cm. (5 7/8in.) high
See Illustrations
The globe is made of white glass in two hinged hemispheres held closed by a sprung catch. The cartography is mostly printed on the surface, with the oceans in blue and the Continents in white with hand outlining in various colours. A note regarding the patent in the southern Indian Ocean reads BREVET D'INVENTION No. 151,821. The meridian of Paris, ecliptic, Tropics, and lines of latitude and longitude are all marked but ungraduated. At the North Pole there is a small picture of two ships and an iceberg. The globe is mounted on a circular gilt-brass base with three beaded and scroll-shaped legs on ball feet.
