Lot Essay

Louise Carleton Putnam was the wife of Major Israel Putnam, a decorated Spanish-American War and World War I hero, and a decendant of the Revolutionary War hero of the same name who famously declared, "Don't fire until you see the whites of their eyes!" Louise and Israel had three children, one of whom, Carleton Putnam, turned a small California airline into a larger mid-west airline, which merged into Delta Airlines in 1953. Carleton Putnam was the Chairman of the Board of Delta Airlines for many years.
