Lot Essay

Carl Oscar Borg arrived in California from his native Sweden in 1902 and, after working as a scene painter for the film industry for a few years, held his first exhibition of paintings 1905. He was immediately recognized for his artistic talents and Phoebe Hearst, mother of William Randolph Hearst, sponsored his return to Europe for five years of further study. In 1913 and 1914 he received awards in France for his work and it is also likely that he executed Summer Day, Pacific Coast and California Trees (lot 83) there as poetic tributes to his adopted California.
