Lot Essay

Puddingstone is the general term for a conglomerate of sedimentary flint pebbles in a matrix of chert - both part of the large quartz family. These bottles come in a wide variety of colour, texture, size and shape.

The graceful form of this bottle is both unusual and very well fashioned, with the hexagonal faces tapering slightly toward the circular foot, and the broad, elegant shoulders creating an umbrella shape as they curve from the upper edges of the panels and blend gently into the very slightly flared neck.

The faceting may indicate an Imperial origin for this bottle since this type of decoration was extremely popular at the Court during the Qing dynasty. Compare the faceted agate bottle raised on a similar circular foot in the Qing Court Collection in the Palace Museum, Beijing, illustrated in Snuff Bottles, The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum, vol. 47, Hong Kong, 2003, no. 262.
