A VERY FINE INSIDE-PAINTED ROCK CRYSTAL SNUFF BOTTLE
SIGNED ZHOU LEYUAN, DATED SUMMER, BINGXU YEAR (1886), WITH THE SEAL ZHIYIN; BOTTLE, 1760-1886

Finely painted with a continuous riverside landscape with a sage and his servant crossing a bridge, while another scholar sits meditatively in an open boat helmed by a boatman, with an outdoor pavilion and distant rooftops amid trees and mountain peaks, stopper; and together with a watercolour of the bottle by Malcolm Golding, 1971-1972, 7 x 10 in. (17.8 x 25.4 cm.)

The title of the painting reads 'An ancient boat moored at a deserted pier on an autumn river.'

This spectacular example, in probably one of the earlier crystal bottles that so often inspired this most influential of all inside-painted artists to his finest work, comes from early in his career when he was first becoming justly famous and creating masterpieces that set new standards both technically and artistically for the art-form.
