Lot Essay

Six of the present candlesticks were made by Diederik Lodewijk Bennewitz in 1818 and 1821. At that time he was managing the workshop of the Bennewitz & Bonebakker firm.
The candlesticks are executed ' l'antique. Bennewitz applied the classically inspired tripod during the first decade of the 19th Century regularly. The Amsterdam Historical Museum has a ten-part ensemble, comprising six fairly similar candlesticks, two girando-les and two matching chestnut vases from the collection of Mr and Mrs Willet-Holthuysen (Founders of Museum Willet-Holthuysen, which resorts under the Amsterdam Historical Museum). This ensemble was acquired in 1811 from Bennewitz & Bonebakker as a wedding gift for the parents of Mrs Willet-Holthuysen. The candlesticks are described in the firm's debit book as: "6 driekante kandelaars met rosetten & biesen, plankjes in de voeten" (6 triangular candlesticks with rosettes & stripes, board in the feet).
The collection of the As. Bonebakker & Zoon firm comprised a drawing (ca. 1800-1825) of a candlestick that is fairly similar to the ones in this lot (depicted in: H. Vreeken, 2000, op. cit., p. 299).
Two candlesticks of this type with girandoles were sold in these rooms 26 November 1996, lot 380 (1807).
Another two of these candlesticks fitted with perfume burners were sold in these rooms 28 September 2000, lot 333 (1809).
