Lot Essay

Peter Hujar was born in Trenton, New Jersey and moved to New York in 1946. After studying with Lisette Model, he worked first as a fashion photographer the opened his own studio in the 1960s. A noted portraitist, Hujar photographed a variety of often controversial personalities, including his lover David Wojnarowicz (lot 356), the drag artist Candy Darling (lot 175) and Chlöe Finch (lot 346), the last two are examples of his finest work. His extensive animal imagery - as in the case of the 'Electric Cow' (lot 347) - were often regarded by Hujar as 'self-portraits' and worthy of as much consideration as his human sitters.

Another casualty of the AIDS virus, Hujar described his distinctive style as: '...not approaching the situation beforehand with a particular idea, but letting the situation unfold. What gets into the picture depends on what's going on at the time.'
