Dissatisfied with the Detroit Photo Guild, Callahan, Todd Webb, Don Shapero and Joe Munroe left the guild in 1941 and began to meet informally at Siegel's house. During this period, Siegel introduced Callahan to such artists as László Moholy-Nagy whose work continued to inspire Callahan and challenge the way he viewed the world through his camera. This print was given by Callahan to Siegel in December, 1941. It is a fine example of an early work by Callahan and is a precursor to his later work of the 1950s.
