Robert Riger, a merchant marine in World War II and graduate of Brooklyn's Pratt Art Institute, was particularly drawn to the great drama of high-level sporting events, particularly football. With a knack for capturing the 'decisive moment' in a play or gesture, he was a regular contributor to Sports Illustrated during the 1950s, and in the 1960s moved into television, where he won nine Emmys for his work.
