The pair of dishes with a butterfly in flight above Chinese leaves and a flowering rose bush below three fruit and flower sprays at the border, 10 3/8 in. (26.3 cm.) diam.; and a rose-Imari dish with a lady and an attendant holding a parasol and a picnic box within an underglaze-blue trellis-pattern border with insect and bat cartouches, some restoration, 9 5/8 in. (24.5 cm.) diam. (3)

Lot Essay

A rose-Imari plate from the same service as the dish is in the Hodroff Collection, illustrated by D. Howard, The Choice of the Private Trader, London, 1994, p. 57, no. 30, where the author explains that this service was probably made in circa 1723, shortly after the introduction of pink enamel.
