Lot Essay

See D. F. Lunsingh Scheurleer, Chinese Export Porcelain - Chine de Commande, London, 1974, for two examples of sugar castors, although of different form to the present lot: one, fig. 116, is in the Princessehof Museum, Leeuwarden, and the other, fig. 118, which has a similar locking device for the cover, is in the Flehite Museum, Amersfoort. Although sugar castors in silver were popular around this time, there does not appear to be a known silver castor of this form which would have provided a prototype for the Chinese potter.
