Lot Essay

For a very similar dish with this design, see E. Gordon, Collecting Chinese Export Porcelain, London, 1978, p. 17, where the author identifies this figure as being part of the group of figures in the engraving by Larmessin after a drawing by Lancret entitled 'Le Printemps'. Another very similar plate, but with additional gilt lacework at the border is illustrated by Hervouët and Bruneau, La Porcelaine des Compagnies des Indes à Décor Occidental, Paris, 1986, p. 135, fig. 6.60. A plate depicting a more complete scene showing three figures in a garden and the engraving are illustrated by M. Beurdeley, Porcelain of the East India Companies, London, 1962, p.55, figs. 30 and 31; and another plate by Hervouët and Bruneau, op.cit., p.164, fig. 7.65.
