Lot Essay
The armorial service appears to be unrecorded; see D. S. Howard, Chinese Armorial Porcelain, London, 1974, p. 372 for a dinner service with the arms of Foulis with a similar border design, and p. 437 for a tea-service with spearhead border for Foulis impaling Jones (amended to Jenkins in volume II). Mr. Howard informs us that it is likely this service was ordered at the same time as the tea-service.

Howard, The Choice of the Private Trader, London, 1994, pp. 116-117, no. 114; and a jug and cover in The British Museum, was exhibited Ancient Chinese Trade Ceramics, Taibei, 1994, catalogue no. 64.
