Decorated primarily en grisaille, with details heightened in gilt, with a classic urn bearing a profile portrait within a pink-enamel oval, the border with a floral garland entwined with a rope-pattern ribbon, the shallow domed cover with a peach finial, finial chipped

Lot Essay

Compare the butter-tub with similar portrait medallion and coat-of-arms for the Danish family van Hemert, illustrated by B. L. Grandjean, Dansk Ostindisk Porcelaen, Copenhagen, 1965, fig. 79, cat. 64; and a teapot with initials for Jorgen Bech, Grandjean, op.cit., fig. 87a, cat. 70. A teabowl and saucer with a similar portrait in a pink medallion was in the Mottahedeh Collection, ilustrated by Howard and Ayers, China for the West, London and New York, 1978, vol. I, p. 341, no. 339, where it is suggested the portrait depicts one of the Muses, or possibly Apollo. See also the very similar urn and supporters motif to that on the present lot, on the crested service made for Robert Ouchterlony in circa 1780-85, which was copied from his book-plate; a two-handled bowl from that service and the book-plate, which are in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, are illustrated by Geoffrey A. Godden, Oriental Export Market Porcelain, London, 1979, pp. 204-5, fig. 120.
