Enamelled at the centre with Venus and Cupid in a chariot drawn by two doves amongst clouds approaching Minerva and a reclining figure, possibly Telemachus, beside a shield and sword lying on the ground, within a narrow gilt trellis band in the well and spearheads at the rim, shallow rim chip retouched, minor underside rim chips

Lot Essay

This scene, rarely found in famille rose enamels but more frequently en grisaille (see lot 174), is often described as Minerva protecting Adonis, but the shield and sword would indicate that the reclining figure is that of Telemachus, son of Ulysses and upon whom Venus had designs.
