Lot Essay

A plate with this scene is illustrated by Hervouët and Bruneau, La Porcelaine des Compagnies des Indes à Décor Occidental, Paris, 1986, p. 312, fig. 13.79. See also the service with this central design with the arms of Mackenzie, D. S. Howard, Chinese Armorial Porcelain, London, 1974, p. 334. Mr. Howard suggests the scene is after an engraving entitled The Rescue of Andromeda, but Perseus who saves Andromeda from the rocks is not usually found carrying a trident, which is the attribute for Neptune.
