Applied with two descending cranes forming the handles and two pairs of iron-red chilong dragons on the shoulder, the pear-shaped body brightly enamelled on one side with a gentleman holding a mirror while a reclining lady tries on a hat, on the other side with a reclining couple below a figure of Cupid in the sky above, all reserved on a pale iron-red and gilt ground

Lot Essay

A pilgrim bottle with the same scenes on either side as in the present example is in the Boymans-van Beuningen Museum, Rotterdam, illustrated by D. F. Lunsingh Scheurleer, Chinese Export Porcelain - Chine de Commande, London, 1974, fig. 223, and p. 222, where it is dated to the second quarter of the 18th Century.
