Lot Essay

The Sporting Intelligence of the London Times reported on August 1, 1868 that the "'large silver bowl' which formed the Chesterfield Cup this year was worthy of Signor Monti and the Hancocks. It was, like the Stewards' Cup, devoted in its medallions to the House of Lennox, and Dettingen and a staghunt in Goodwood Park were the conspicuous figures. The recumbent boys holding a wreath, over which Lord Stamford will have to inscribe the name of Charnwood, were exquisitely modelled. It was a work of art worthy of Goodwood." Three-year old Charnwood handily defeated Mercury and Python to secure the Chesterfield Cup, valued at 300 sovereigns, at the 1868 Goodwood Races.
