The setting of the present lot is undoubtedly the beach at Katwijk. Zoetelief Tromp's affection for the fishing village began in 1905 when the artist, together with his wife Marie, daughter of the The Hague School painter Bernardus Johannes Blommers (1845-1914), and their two children Erica and Ben, took up residence for the summer in the rented villa 'Clementine' on the North-Boulevard. His father-in-law undoubtedly stimulated a visit to the fishing-village, as he too was inspired and captivated by the life of the fisherfamilies. The Zoetelief Tromp family moved from Blaricum to Katwijk permanently in 1919.
Among his summer works many paintings have as a subject children playing on the beach, usually figuring his own children: Erica, Ben, Hette, Marijke, Wytske and Jean Jules. The present lot is a perfect example of Zoetelief Tromp's beach scenes and, according to a descendant of the artist, depicts Erica, Ben and Marijke playing in the surf.
