Philip Richard Morris was born in Davenport in 1838, and entered the school at the Royal Academy in 1855. He won two silver medals and in 1858, the gold medal for a painting entitled The Good Samaritan. He exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy from 1858 to 1901. Throughout his career he painted historical and Biblical genre, and later in his life turned almost entirely to portraiture.
