Marie-François Firmin-Girard was born in Poncin on 29 May 1838. He developed a passion for art and literature at a very early age and received several awards for his ability to write and draw. In 1853 the Ecole Impériale de dessin gave him a prize for his drawings and by 1854 he joined Charles Gleyre's studio where he worked amongst other artists such as Renoir, Monet and Sisley. Gleyre's patronage later enabled him to access to the Ecole des Beaux-Arts.
