Lot Essay

In the late 19th century porcelain fairings were given as prizes or bought cheaply at fairs. Most consist of small figure groups with inscriptions on the bases, and further of trinket boxes and match strikers. They depict amusing scenes of marriage, parenthood, children and daily life of the latter half of the 19th century. It has also been suggested that the name 'fairing' derives from 'fair earnings'.
