A Japanese lacquered and gilt zushi, Edo period
the plain dark case opening to reveal a seated figure of Buddha backed by a flaming mandarla, flanked by two standing bodhisattvas, all on tiered open lotus thrones, the doors and scrolling borders finely painted with further buddhistic landscape scenes -- 3 7/8in. (9.8cm.) high.
