Lot Essay

Cf. A. Bottini et al., Antike Helme, Mainz, 1988, p. 114, pl. 8 for the type with remaining ivory inlaid eyes.

This helmet shows a stylistic progression from the earlier Corinthian type helmets with eye-holes which were worn down over the face, to a helmet with eye-holes that have become purely decorative. In the latter the helmet was no longer worn for full face protection but pushed to the top of the head.
