AN INSCRIBED GREEK BRONZE FULL LENGTH GREAVE
CIRCA 5TH-4TH CENTURY B.C.
With dot-punched vertical Greek inscription, well modelled for the right leg with incised lines and grooves outlining the calf muscle, the perimeter pierced with attachment holes; and another full length bronze greave with dot-punched inscription, slightly misshapen, circa 5th-4th Century B.C.
18¼ in. (46.5 cm.) and 17 in. (43.2 cm.) high respectively (2)

Acquired in the late 1980s/early 1990s, Krefeld.

Lot Essay

It has been suggested that one possible interpretation of the inscription on the first greave reads "Savour the Slaughter".
