REIGN OF MAXIMINUS I THRAX, 237 A.D.
Issued by the Emperor Maximinus the Thracian, under the consulate of L. Marius Perpetuus and L. Mummidius Cornelianus, dated 7 January, 237 A.D., granting Roman citizenship and marriage rights to the cavalryman M. Aurelius Valens, son of Surus from Thrace. The whole comprising two separate tablets of rectangular form, both pierced twice for binding, fragmentary remains of twisted bronze binding, 7¼ x 5¾ in. (18.5 x 14.5 cm.); another separate Roman bronze tablet with remains of seven witness names, cut down on the left with encrustation, 5 7/8 x 5¼ in. (15 x 13.3 cm.) max.; a military bronze diploma fragment beginning "IMP CAESAR NERV[AE FILIUS]", presumably for Trajan, in the 18th year of his reign, 114 A.D., 2¾ in. (7 cm.) long max., mounted; and another Roman bronze fragment for a member of cohort VIII whose names starts "M. AULULA...", 1¾ in. (4.5 cm.) long max. (5)
