Lot Essay

The arms are those of Paget for Sir Henry William Paget, first Marquess of Anglesey and second Earl of Uxbridge. Born in 1768, he was educated at Westminster School and Christ Church, Oxford. He was MP of Carnarvon boroughs 1790-6 for Milborne Port 1796-1810. He raised a regiment of infantry in 1793, chiefly from among his father's Straffordshire tenants and entered the Army under the Duke of York. Exchaning into the Hussars, he subsequently distinguished himself, during Sir John Moore's campaign as the gallant leader of the cavalry brigade, and the cavalry and horse artillery of Waterloo, where he lost a leg. He was created Marquess of Anglesey, 4 July 1815 and Field Marshall in 1846. The service was possibly commisssioned at his creation as Knight of the Garter in 1818
