With central Latin inscribed panel reading: LAVAMINI MUNDI ESTOTE, ["Wash yourself and you will be pure"], flanked on either side by deep strigilar fluting, above is a cross and below a one line inscription

Acquired by the present owner 15 years ago with the purchase of a house in Galloway, Scotland. The sarcophagus had been in the garden prior to 1950, having been inherited by the previous owners.
