The Monkey King
Monkey King, or "Sun Wu-Kong", is the most beloved hero in a renowned Chinese classical novel, "Journey to the West".
Born out of the rock and fertilised by the grace of the Heaven, "Sun Wu-Kong" was virtually indestructible. Taught by a master Taoist, he was able to transform himself into seventy-two images and employ clouds as a vehicle that allow him to travel 180,000 miles in a single somersault.
Being extremely smart and capable, and with an unbelievable mischievous nature, restless irreverence and irrepressible curiosity, "Sun Wu-Kong" began to create chaos in the Heaven and the Oceans. He even went to Heaven himself and demanded the title "Great Sage - Equal of Heaven" - which he received as the Jade Emperor decided that the easiest way to contain his mischief was to trick him into staying in Heaven.
The story came to a climax when the Jade Emperor ordered a palace to be built for him beside the Queen's Sacred Peach Garden to enable him to take care of the grove. One day, the Queen was to give a Peach Banquet for all the gods of each palace except "Sun Wu-Kong". When he found out that he was not invited, he was outraged. He then totally disrupted the Peach Banquet by making a mess of the arrangements, drinking all the wine, eating up all the food, and gobbling down the elixir of immortality.
Following this debacle, he took the remaining of the peaches, fled from Heaven back to his Water Curtain Cave in the Mountain of Flowers and Fruit, and received a joyous welcome from his fellow monkeys. This scene is beautifully presented in lot 2209.

Depicting a group of ten monkeys, on the Mountain of Flowers and Fruit carved in black rock; the seated Monkey King holding two leafy peaches and two monkeys, carved in semi-translucent pale green jadeite suffused with bright green streaks and splashes; five monkeys carved in semi-opaque jadeite, two of lavender colour, one of honey yellow colour, one of bright emerald green and brown colour and one of light emerald green colour; and two monkeys carved in icy, sea green or pale green jadeite; to the king's left, a honey yellow jadeite banner with the inscription "qitian dasheng" or "The Greatest Sage"; the Mountain further enhanced by vari-coloured jadeite mushrooms and flowers, of icy to semi-opaque material (accompanied by a wooden platform carved as rocks with lingzhi sprigs), black rock mountain 21.0 cm. high, the Monkey King approximately 61.06 x 52.0 x 28.81 mm., in an original black satin box
With certificate no. KJ4482 dated 9 December 2003 from the Hong Kong Jade & Stone Laboratory stating that the banner tested is natural jadeite and no polymer is detected
