Lot Essay

The gadrooned edge and 'French' hollow-cornered tablets feature in patterns for 'Tea Kettle Stands' issued in Mayhew and Ince's Universal System of Household Furniture, 1762, pl. 14.
A pattern for a related wine-bottle cistern or 'Gardevine' [sic], with patera-filled hollow-cornered tablets is in the 1768 Estimate Sketch Book of Gillows of Lancaster (L. Boynton, Gillow Furniture Designs 1760-1800, Royston, 1995, fig. 181).
The motif of flowered tablets also appears on a bookcase attributed to the court cabinet-maker William Vile and dated to around 1760 (R. Edwards and M. Jourdain, Georgian Cabinet-Makers, London, rev. ed., 1955, fig. 59).
Lot 51 in this sale was also in the Frederick Howard Reed collection.
