Lot Essay

The tall serpentined form of these chairs evolved from the early 18th century 'India back' chairs and the 'chairs with bending backs' such as those supplied in 1717 to George I by Richard Roberts (d. 1733) of 'The Royal Chair', Marylebone Street (G.Beard and J. Cross, 'Thomas and Richard Roberts', Apollo, September 1998, p. 47). This pair of chairs, with 'India' flowered upholstery, have the Ionic-scrolled capitals of their serpentined legs inlaid with mosaiced chevron ribbons.
