The pier glass, with its Roman-medallion frame wrapped by Roman foliage, relates to a frame pattern invented by the Rome-trained artist William Kent (d. 1748), Master Carpenter to George II's Board of Works and Portrait Painter to the King (illustrated as the frontispiece to John Vardy's Some Designs of Mr. Inigo Jones and Mr. William Kent, London, 1744).
