Lot Essay

The chair's flowered rail derives from a pattern in T. Hope's Household Furniture and Interior Decoration, 1807 (pl. 11) and apart from the crest-rail, corresponds to a set of chairs bearing the brand of 'Ford' (sold anonymously, Sotheby's London, 7 May 1971, lot 169 and another set sold anonymously, Christie's London, 26 April 1990, lot 138).
