Lot Essay

The robust table legs, with their chamfered and turned pillars, relate to that of a chair pattern illustrated in Thomas King's Modern Style of Cabinet Work Exemplified, 1829. The fashion remained popular with Gillows' clients and was used for instance on the parlour chairs supplied by Gillows of London and Lancaster for the Judges' Lodgings, Lancaster in the 1860s (S. Sartin, Gillow Chairs and Fashion,1991, p. 38).
